Corrections and takedown policy

How we correct mistakes, and when we remove or change something that was published.

Corrections

  • When we get a fact wrong, we correct it as soon as we know.
  • Online, we fix the story and add a note at the end that says what was changed and when.
  • If the mistake was in the printed paper, we also print a correction in the next paper, where readers will see it.
  • Serious mistakes get an apology as well as a correction.
  • Corrections are handled by the editor. We reply to the person who told us within 2 working days.

How to tell us

Use the “Spotted a mistake in this story? Tell us” form at the end of any story online, or email admin@thevillagenews.co.za, or call 079 408 7722.

Removing or changing a published story

Our stories are a public record, so we do not remove them just because someone would prefer they were not there. We will look again at a story, and may change, anonymise or remove it, when:

  • it is wrong and cannot be fixed with a correction;
  • it puts someone at risk, or names a child or a victim who should not have been named;
  • a court order or the law requires it;
  • a criminal case was later withdrawn or the person was found not guilty, and the story does not say so (we will usually add an update rather than remove the story);
  • it contains personal information that should not be public.

Choose “Please remove something” on the Tell us form, or email admin@thevillagenews.co.za. The editor decides and replies within 2 working days.

Adverts

If we make a mistake in your advert, we correct it and run it again at no charge, as set out in our Advertising terms.
