The Hermanus conference of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul is calling on the Overstrand community to help deliver Christmas cheer to the area’s poorest residents through its annual Bags of Love campaign.

The initiative provides food parcels to families and individuals in need across the broader Overstrand area in the run-up to Christmas. The number of bags distributed will depend on residents' and businesses' generosity.

Last year, the campaign distributed about 180 bags, and the society hopes to distribute at least that many this year.

Each Bag of Love costs R300 and contains essential food items such as maize meal, soya mince and rice, along with a few festive treats.

Rotary, Hermanus church communities, Eastcliff SPAR and individual donors have supported previous campaigns. The society is appealing to the public to help make this year’s campaign equally successful.

There are several ways to contribute. Individuals and businesses can donate directly into the society’s bank account, or customers shopping at Eastcliff SPAR can ask the cashier to add R300 to their purchase towards a bag.

SPAR will assemble the bags and deliver them to Saint Vincent de Paul for distribution to deserving recipients. Alternatively, donors can buy a bag directly from Eastcliff SPAR and give it to someone they believe would benefit.

Donations can be made to the following account:

Bank: ABSA Bank, Hermanus branch

Account name: SVDP – Bags of Love

Account number: 0092 5114 2278

For more information, phone Terry McCarthy at 083 255 8614 or John Lyons at 083 388 7930. Every contribution can help put food on the table and bring a little extra joy to a family facing a difficult Christmas.
