Overstrand cricket clubs had an unhappy start to their Boland Premier League campaigns on the weekend. Hawston and Hermanus suffered defeats,

Despite an early promise in the bowling department, Hawston’s hope of a league-debut win was dashed by an in-form Stellenbosch University (Maties) outfit.

Winning the toss, Hawston’s decision to field first paid dividends and Maties found themselves under pressure at 84/5 in the 24th over. But Gysbert Wege and Zack Micklewright turned the tide with a commanding 129-run partnership, putting the visitors firmly in control.

Chasing a steep target of 280, Hawston’s reply got off to the worst possible start and the hosts slumped to 27/5 in the 13th over, leaving themselves with an insurmountable mountain to climb.

The lower order couldn't come to the party, and Hawston were bundled out for a paltry 56. They will look to bounce back when they face Van der Stel away this weekend.

Hermanus succumbed to a 101-run defeat against Van der Stel at the Sir Div Oval.

Batting first, Van der Stel reached 225 in their 50 overs despite Hermanus bowlers, Francois Stoman and Lo-Waden Siegelaar, claiming three wickets apiece.

In reply, Hermanus openers Warren Davids and Lucas Janse van Vuuren put together a good 72-run partnership of 69 balls, but the batting order then collapsed to 124 all out.

Other results:

Paarl East beat Young Peoples by 27 runs; Wellington defeated Vredenburg-Saldanha by 39 runs; Victorians downed Coronations by seven wickets; and Worcester beat Stellenbosch by 17 runs.
