Fifteen-year-old Lyra-Jane Esau, a Hawston Secondary School pupil, is already making her mark on the rugby field.
The talented girls’ player made her debut in 2023 and has gone from strength to strength ever since.
Lyra-Jane has been selected by the South African Rugby Union (SARU) as one of three Boland players invited to attend the prestigious U16 early player development camp in Stellenbosch from 26 September to 2 October.
The camp is reserved for high-quality, young players identified through SARU’s Youth Week tournaments, making Esau’s selection a significant milestone. It is also believed to be the first time in Hawston Secondary School’s history that a learner has been invited to attend the development camp.
Adding to her impressive achievements, Esau was the youngest player in the Boland Girls U16 squad that competed at the FNB Girls’ Week in Durban earlier this year.
A versatile player, Esau is equally comfortable at scrum-half or fly-half, meaning she can influence the game from different positions.
With her talent, determination and love of rugby continuing to grow, Esau’s latest opportunity could prove to be another important step towards a promising future in the sport.
