Robyn Samuels made history last Friday, becoming the first woman to be promoted to Principal Inspector in the Overstrand Municipality’s Law Enforcement Department.
Robyn's family moved to Hawston in 2000. After graduating from Hawston High School in 2006, she applied for seasonal work at the municipality, sparking her interest in municipal by-laws and the role of law enforcement.
“I enjoyed working with people and, most importantly, being able to help,” she says.
After a stint as a beach monitor, Robyn was offered a further six-month contract which paved the way for a permanent position.
It was a proud moment when, in 2008, she was appointed as the municipality’s first woman LE officer, going on to become the second female senior inspector in 2022. With continued education being key to success, Robyn completed numerous courses offered by the municipality.
She says the job can be stressful, particularly when dealing with deadlines. At the end of the day, Robyn enjoys relaxing at home with her partner, Ralmon Hansen, who works in the traffic department and understands the demands of interfacing with the public.
For Robyn, however, law enforcement is also about giving back. She achieves this by getting involved in projects such as providing soup for needy residents during winter, helping the elderly, and supporting Women’s Month initiatives.
